Ítem Acceso Abierto Impact of open innovation in Peruvian food firms(Universidad del Valle, 2022-02-01) Del Carpio Gallegos, Javier FernandoFood firms are an important part of Latin American economies, and they face an increasingly competitive context due to their customers’ demands. For this reason, the main objective of this study is to empirically verify how inbound open innovation and absorptive capacity have a positive influence on technological innovations in Peruvian food firms. A model was designed that shows the relationship between the constructs, and it is based on a sample of 111 food firms that participated in the third national innovation survey of the manufacturing industry and knowledge-intensive service firms carried out in 2018. The present study contributes to the literature in the following two ways: First, it contributes to the research of the food industry, which is an industry representative of low-tech intensity industries that lack research; second, it aims to deepen the knowledge about the positive influence of open innovation and absorptive capacity on food firms’ technological innovation capability. A structural equation model is proposed. The sample is made up of 783 manufacturing firms. However, innovation practices of these companies have not taken yet the attention of innovation scholars. This article proposes a model to study how absorptive capacity, perceived impact of information sources and expenditure in acquisition of technology are associated with technological innovation practices in Peruvian low- and medium-low-tech manufacturing companies. A sample of 856 manufacturing companies of low- and medium-low- tech was obtained from the first National Survey of Innovation in the Manufacturing Industry carried out in 2012. A SEM model is proposed and has been analyzed using a partial least squares approach. Our study reveals that absorptive capacity is associated to improve technological innovation, that perceived impact of information sources are important for absorptive capacity and that greater importance should be given to the acquisition of technology: machinery, hardware and software.Ítem Acceso Abierto Absorptive capacity and innovation in low-tech companies in emerging economies(Universidad Alberto Hurtado. Although some studies show the antecedents of innovation capacity for developed economies and high technological industries, scant research outcomes exist for different settings. This study tries to shed some light on the drivers of innovation capacity for low technological companies in emerging economies. Using the absorptive capacity as a driver of technological and non-technological innovation capacity, this study proposes a SEM model to contribute to the literature of innovation capacity including technological and non-technological innovation, and the relationship between them, in low-techonology industries in an emerging economy. A sample of 706 manufacturing companies from Peru is used. The academic contribution of this study states that absorptive capacity favors technological and non-technological innovation capacity and that non-technological innovation affects technological one. Thus, executives can emphasize organizational innovation and absorptive capacity as means to achieve product innovation in developing countries. A non-random sample of 1429 employees was used who had been working at least one year in the current company. The sample, composed of workers from different industries, was collected in postgraduate programs of business schools from seven Latin American countries. A multi-group structural equation model was built with the involved variables, which adopted two different conditions: i.e., unconstrained and constrained questionnaire measurement weights. According to the results, leadership by itself is insufficient to promote employees innovative work behaviour. Transformational and transactional leadership exert effect on this behaviour only through absorptive capacity and work engagement respectively. Likewise, absorptive capacity and employee work engagement show direct effects on innovative work behaviour. Additionally, organizational climate for innovation shows a significant moderating effect on the all relationships included in the model. Despite the cultural differences, the two-condition model yielded the same effect in each country, which indicates the validity of a general model of innovative work behaviour for the whole region supporting the common identity of this region. As a conclusion, leadership practices are needed to encourage innovative work behaviour within the Latin American organizational context, however some individual (engagement) and organizational (absorptive capacity) conditions are also needed to ensure this effect. Implications for human resources management are discussed.
