Ítem Solo Metadatos Factors driving IPO variability: evidence from Pakistan stock exchange(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2021-12-19) Mehmood, Waqas; Mohd-Rashid, Rasidah; Zi Ong, Chui; Abdullah Abbas, YasirPurpose. The objectives of this study are twofold. First, it intends to investigate the symmetric link between initial public offering (IPO) variability and the determinants of the stock market index, treasury bill rate, inflation, GDP growth rate and foreign direct investment. Second, this study intends to examine the asymmetric link between IPO variability and the aforementioned determinants, namely the stock market index, treasury bill rate, inflation, GDP growth rate and foreign direct investment. Design/methodology/approach. Data from 1992 to 2018 were gathered from the country of Pakistan in order to achieve the above objectives. Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) and Phillips Perron (PP) unit root tests were employed to determine the data's stationarity properties. The Auto Regressive Distributive Lags (ARDL) model was utilized to examine the symmetric links, and the Non-Linear Auto Regressive Distributive Lag Model (NARDL) was employed to determine the asymmetric links. While the long-run co-integration was examined using the ARDL bound test, the short-run dynamics were tested using the error correction method (ECM). Findings. The macroeconomic variables of the stock market index, treasury bill rate, inflation, GDP growth rate and foreign direct investment are found to pose significant short-run and long-run symmetric and asymmetric effects on IPO variability. These results indicate the significance of the aforementioned variables in enhancing IPO variability. The findings also demonstrate the typical reactions of inflation, GDP and FDI towards negative and positive shocks in IPO variability and inflation. This evidence implies that Pakistan's poor capital market development is reflected in the country's weak macroeconomic factors. At the same time, the reduced IPO variability in the country also reflects the lack of confidence among prospective issuers and investors due to Pakistan's weak macroeconomic indicators. Originality/value. This is the first study of its kind to properly investigate the symmetric and asymmetric effects of the macroeconomic variables on Pakistan's IPO variability.Ítem Solo Metadatos Developing economies and the Asia-Pacific economic cooperation forum-APEC: intrabloc trade and attraction of foreign direct investment from region(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2008-06-30) Rodríguez, ChristianSince one of the main goals of the APEC is to facilitate the international trade and investments among its members, it is said that taking over APEC presidency (as Peru in 2008), will contribute to foster trade and attract investments from member economies. But, is there any pattern which allows quantifying the benefi ts resulting from this kind of commitment? After evaluating the trade statistics of APEC developing economies ever since the creation of the Forum in 1989, it can be inferred that presiding APEC does not guarantee an increase in its trade with the rest of APEC economies. Right after hosting the summit, its imports grow higher compared with its exports, but there is not any conclusive information on the growth of foreign direct investment (FDI). Nevertheless, even though the growth of trade and FDI attraction from APEC other member economies does not rely exclusively on taking over the Forum’s Presidency, this commitment is a unique opportunity to promote trade with the planet’s most important economic bloc.Ítem Solo Metadatos Localización geográfica y sectores de inversión: factores decisivos en el desempeño de las multinacionales mexicanas durante la crisis(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2013-06-30) Basave Kunhardt, Jorge; Gutiérrez Haces, M. TeresaDuring the global crisis, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has withdrawn from developed economies and has substantially increased in emerging and transitional economies. In this scenario, Mexican MNEs have been spreading during the last four years, after starting their internationalization two decades ago. In this paper, we show that the relationship between two factors— economic sector and geographical location of FDI — explains the difference in outcome of corporate operations during the crisis. While positive results have been found regarding investments in Latin America and Asia, less favorable results are registered in investments in Europe and the United States. These findings modify the theoretical approach on the “location determinants” of FDI. Our sources are enterprise's websites and direct surveys applied during the last four years for a sample of 20 of the largest MNEs in Mexico.Ítem Solo Metadatos Foreign direct investment and institutional stability: who drives whom?(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2019-06-01) Mahmood, Nihal; Shakil, Mohammad Hassan; Akinlaso, Ishaq Mustapha; Tasnia, MashiyatPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and institutional stability. The focus country is Canada. It is one of the few countries where the economy remained relatively stable compared to other economies during the Global Financial Crisis. It is crucial for Canada to determine the optimal level of institutional development to attract more FDI and sustain the sound financial stability in future. Design/methodology/approach – This study uses the auto-regressive distributive lag (ARDL) approach to understand the relationship between FDI and institutional stability along with other controlled variables for instance gross national product inflation and exports. Findings – The key finding of this work is that FDI and institutional stability are cointegrated in the long run. The error correction model of ARDL shed light on institutional stability being an exogenous variable and FDI is an endogenous variable. Institutional stability affects FDI as it is exogenous. The findings will help policymakers to implement policies to strengthen the institution’s settings and this in turn will attract more investment. Originality/value – Based on previous theoretical and empirical literature most of the research points to FDI positively affect institutional stability. In some cases the relationship does not always hold true. This study will fix the gap in the literature by investigating the relationship between FDI and institutional stability of Canada.
