Enterprise UNIONISM in crisis in Japan
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2004-06-30) Suzuki, Hiromasa
During the last decades, the unionization rate in Japan has been decreasing, while new forms of employment and outsourcing practices are imposed. In this context, the author analyses whether trade unions can continue to be considered legitimate representatives of workers and if they are responding to their aspirations. The first part of the work examines the achievements of trade unionism in companies between 1945 and 1980, while the second part exposes the problem areas identified since in 1991 the economic conditions of Japan changed substantially as a result of global competition and, in As a consequence, the companies restructured their activities, which included a reduction in employment and new locations in China.

Effective use of marketing technology in Eastern Europe: Web analytics, social media, customer analytics, digital campaigns and mobile applications
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2015-12-01) Jayaram, Dureen; Manrai, Ajay K.; Manrai, Lalita A.
The transition economies of Eastern Europe present both the opportunities and challenges for companies operating in these markets. On one hand, these countries have a large number of technology savvy young consumers, and on the other, the markets must also take into consideration the macro-environment of a country and market conditions which make the use of certain market technologies more feasible and attractive compared to others. It is certainly true in terms of the timing for introduction of various technologies in a country. Drawing analogy for the “IDITAROD RACE” we develop three different “Sled Dog Team layouts” for market characteristics and technologies for three Eastern European countries, namely, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Albania. The ten market characteristics included in our research are: digital connectivity divide, economic power, demand type, privacy laws, demographics, and competitive conditions, attitude towards technology, institutional maturity, corporate social responsibility, and corruption. The ten marketing technologies included in our research are: digital profiling, segmentation, websites, and search engines marketing, campaign management, content management, social media, mobile application, digital collaborations, and analytics. Company case studies are analyzed and reported for each of these three countries which support the three models presented in our research.

Corporate governance characteristics and valuation: inferences from quantile regression
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2016-12-01) Shawtari, Fekri Ali; Salem, Milad Abdelnabi; Hussain, Hafezali Iqbal; Alaeddin, Omar; Bin Thabit, Omer
Prior literature on corporate governance and performance provides mixed evidence on the impact ofvarious corporate governance measures on performance indicators. However, most of literatures adoptthe Ordinary Least Square (OLS). This method is based on the central tendency, which may not appro-priately represent the reality in cases where the dependent variable ranges between upper and lowervalues and hence the relationship may not be homogenous across different percentiles of the dependentvariables. A variable having a positive impact based on the central tendency for firms may not be the casefor the firms in the upper or lower bounds. Thus, estimating the means using OLS may not reflect andrepresent the heterogeneity in the estimated relationship. Therefore, quantile regression estimates therelationship at any point conditional on the distribution of dependent variable. This would enable us togenerate various estimated coefficient at certain quantile of dependent variable. Therefore, the objectiveof the study is twofold. First, this study aims to investigate the relationship between corporate gover-nance and performance using OLS. Second, this work further explores the impact of corporate governancemechanisms on performance using quantile regression so as to compare and to shed light on whetherthere is heterogeneity in the influence of these variables on the performance of listed companies acrossquantiles. The results of the study provide evidence that quantile approach shows inconsistency in theresult with OLS and hence indicating the impact depends on the scale size. This theoretically providesfurther support that OLS may represent a poor estimation approach for the reality of firms.

A behavioral analysis of the volatility of interbank interest rates in developed and emerging countries
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2017-06-01) Rossetti, Nara; Nagano, Marcelo Seido; Meirelles, Jorge Luis Faria
Purpose – This paper aims to analyse the volatility of the fixed income market from 11 countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, USA, Germany and Japan) from January 2000 to December 2011 by examining the interbank interest rates from each market. Design/methodology/approach – To the volatility of interest rates returns, the study used models of auto-regressive conditional heteroscedasticity, autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH), generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH), exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (EGARCH), threshold generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (TGARCH) and periodic generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (PGARCH), and a combination of these with autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models, checking which of these processes were more efficient in capturing volatility of interest rates of each of the sample countries. Findings – The results suggest that for most markets, studied volatility is best modelled by asymmetric GARCH processes – in this case the EGARCH – demonstrating that bad news leads to a higher increase in the volatility of these markets than good news. In addition, the causes of increased volatility seem to be more associated with events occurring internally in each country, as changes in macroeconomic policies, than the overall external events. Originality/value – It is expected that this study has contributed to a better understanding of the volatility of interest rates and the main factors affecting this market.

Microfinancing, governance, and performance: a South Asian perspective
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2018-12-01) Saeed, Asif; Javed, Attiya Y.; Noreen, Umara
Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the relationship between microfinance institutions (MFIs) governance and performance. Design/methodology/approach – Using a sample of 215 MFIs from six South Asian countries over the period from 2005 to 2009, the authors examine the effect of chief executive officer (CEO) duality, board size, female CEO, urban market coverage, bank regulation and lending type on financial and social performance of MFIs. Findings – The findings provide evidence that, on the one hand, empowered CEO, large board size and individual lending improve the MFI financial performance and, on another hand, bank regulation and serving in the urban market have a significant association with MFIs’social performance. In an additional analysis, the authors also test this relationship before, during and after the financial crisis of 2007. During crisis period, MFIs’ individual lending reduces the operational cost and bank regulation increases the average loan size in South Asian MFIs. Originality/value– Those studies that are presented in the literature review conclude their result on the bases of global, European, East African and specific to some countries sample. There is no study presented in the whole literature on South Asian sample, in which all countries really face the problem of poverty.

The impact of monetary policy on Islamic bank financing: bank-level evidence from Malaysia
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2018-12-01) Zulkhibri, Muhamed
Purpose – This paper aims to examine the distributional differences of Islamic bank financing responses to financing rate across bank-specific characteristics in dual banking system. The study also aims to provide understanding of how efficiently Islamic banks perform their roles as suppliers of capital for businesses and entrepreneurs. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses panel regression methodology covering all Islamic banks in Malaysia. The study estimates the benchmark model for Islamic bank financing with respect to bank characteristics and monetary policy. Findings – The evidence suggests that bank-specific characteristics are important in determining Islamic financing behaviour. The Islamic financing behaviour is consistent with conventional lending behaviour that the Islamic bank financing operates depending on the level of bank size, liquidity and capital. There is no significant difference between Islamic bank financing and conventional bank lending behaviour with respect to changes in monetary policy. Originality/value – Many problems and challenges relating to Islamic financing instruments, financial markets and regulations must be addressed and resolved. In practice, it would be a good idea if Islamic banks move away from developing debt-based instruments and concentrate more efforts to develop profit and loss sharing instruments.

Effectiveness measurement: when will we get it right?
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2009-12-30) Dwyer, Rocky J.
Credible demonstration of policy or program impacts depends on understanding the distinction between inputs outputs outcomes and indicators. Moreover in order to be trusted public reports on a programs' performance need to focus more selectively on identifying the key measures of performance. In the first place the aim of the article is to provide those involved in the practice of program evaluation with enhanced understanding of the current literature reports and documentation on estimating impacts and results of government programs and policies. Secondly it is designed to share definitions and guidelines used to determine economic impacts. Finally this article includes current best practices involved in measuring incremental impacts all of which we contend enable program evaluation staff providing them with new ways of approaching measurement effectiveness and accountability in a strategic and comprehensive manner.

External audit quality and ownership structure: interaction and impact on earnings management of industrial and commercial Tunisian sectors
(Universidad ESAN. ESAN Ediciones, 2014-12-30) Kouaib, Amel; Jarboui, Anis
This article emphasizes the significance of researching the cross effect of using jointly external audit quality and ownership structure over managerial discretion in a largely unexplored non-Western and emerging context. The analysis is based on a sample of 61 Tunisian firms listed and unlisted on the Tunis Stock Exchange and operating in the industrial and commercial sectors during the period 2007-2011. To provide evidence on this topic we conduct an empirical examination. First we examine the effect of external audit quality and ownership structure on the discretionary accruals for the whole sample. We find that only auditor reputation has a negative and significant effect on earnings management. Second this article provides empirical evidence on the cross effect of external audit quality variables and capital concentration on earnings management. This test suggests that this combination has a negative and significant effect on earnings management in industrial firms but it has a positive and non significant effect in commercial firms. Finally the third empirical test concerns the combined effect of external audit quality and institutional property on earnings management. We find that the cross effect of this combined relation is negatively and significantly associated with earnings management of industrial firms but it has no significant effect on the earnings management of commercial firms. As for the cross effect of the auditor seniority and the institutional property it has a positive and a significant effect in the commercial sectors while it is positively and non-significantly associated with earnings management of industrial firms.
